The Kit Kat Club’s Broadway production of “Cabaret” will close its doors earlier than anticipated on September 21, 2024, due to star Billy Porter’s battle with a “serious case of sepsis,” according to a statement from the production team.
Producer Adam Speers expressed deep regret over the decision, stating, “It is with a heavy heart that we have made the painful decision to end our Broadway run.” Speers also honored the legacy of John Kander, Fred ebb, and Joe Masteroff’s work, noting the production’s privilege in bringing their “significant masterpiece” to New York for a year and a half.
Revival’s Run and Notable Cast Members
“Cabaret at the Kit kat Club” premiered on Broadway in April 2024, initially starring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin. Following their departure in September 2024, Adam Lambert and Auli’i Cravalho, and also Orville Peck and Eva Noblezada, took on the lead roles.
Billy porter joined the cast as the Emcee in July 2024, alongside Marisha Wallace as Sally Bowles. The pair was slated to lead the production through its originally scheduled final weeks, ending October 19, before Porter’s illness necessitated the early closure.

Adam Speers praised Porter’s performance, describing him as an “extraordinary ‘Emcee'” who brought “signature passion and remarkable talent” to the role. Speers expressed wishes for Porter’s swift recovery and indicated a desire to collaborate with him again in the future.
Final Performances and Alternate Cast
By September 21, 2024, the production will have completed 18 preview performances and 592 regular performances. Marty Lauter and David Merino, the production’s longtime Emcee alternates, will share the role during the final two weeks of performances.
