Billy Porter, the acclaimed actor, singer, and fashion icon, has officially stepped into the beauty industry with the launch of his new brand, Black Mona Lisa Beauty. This venture marks a significant moment for Porter, who has long championed self-expression and inclusivity, and sees his new brand as an extension of his powerful alter ego.
Rejecting Gendered Marketing for Universal Appeal
Porter, 55, expressed his frustration with customary beauty marketing, particularly its gendered approach. “I remember reading ingredients – there was a product for face wash for women, and then a product for face wash that was supposed to be for men – and it’s the same ingredients,” he told PEOPLE. This observation fueled his desire to create a brand that offers universal appeal, moving away from restrictive gender norms in beauty. Black Mona Lisa Beauty aims to provide products that cater to everyone, irrespective of gender identity.
A Full Circle Moment: From Teenager to Beauty Mogul
The launch of Black Mona Lisa Beauty is a full circle moment for Porter, whose relationship with the beauty retail world began at a young age. “I got my first job, I went down to Kaufmann’s in Pittsburgh, pennsylvania, which was the big department store, and I went to the Clinique counter,” Porter recalled to WWD. At just 14 years old, he approached the counter with a clear vision: “I need a full face regime.” His proactive approach, even without visible skin concerns, highlighted an early understanding of self-care and preventative beauty.
Overcoming Reservations: Embracing Makeup as Self-Expression
Porter also opened up about past hesitations he experienced in expressing himself thru makeup. “I had some trepidation about how I wanted to express myself sometimes. There were days when I wanted to wear some lipstick, and I wouldn’t do it as of whatever the status quo was,” he shared. This personal journey has informed his commitment to creating a brand that empowers individuals to embrace their authentic selves without fear of judgment or societal expectations.
“black Mona Lisa” as a Transformative Force
The name “Black Mona Lisa” holds deep personal importance for Porter. It originated from his previous musical works, “Black mona Lisa” and “black Mona Lisa Volume 2.” “When that name sort of dropped down from the sky, I knew that it was bigger than a song and an album,” Porter explained to PEOPLE. He views “black Mona Lisa” as his alter ego, a symbol of transformation and artistic expression. Now, he is building out the brand, manifesting a long-held dream. “I sort of have just been dreaming, and scheming, and manifesting, and putting things out into the universe,” he said.
Currently, Porter is masterfully balancing his Broadway commitments, which conclude on October 19th, with the promotion of his new single “Holy Shuffle” featuring Big Freedia. Amidst these endeavors, he is also showcasing the transformative power of Black Mona Lisa Beauty’s innovative products, solidifying his position as a multifaceted artist and entrepreneur.
