The launch of Black Mona ⁤Lisa Beauty is a full circle moment for Porter, whose relationship​ with the beauty ‌retail world began ⁢at a young age. “I got my first job, I went down to Kaufmann’s in Pittsburgh, pennsylvania, which was the big department⁤ store, and I went to the Clinique counter,” Porter recalled to WWD. At just‍ 14⁣ years old, he approached ​the counter with a clear vision: “I need a full face regime.” His proactive approach, even without visible skin concerns, highlighted an early understanding of self-care and preventative beauty.

Overcoming Reservations: ‍Embracing Makeup as Self-Expression

Porter also opened up about past hesitations⁢ he experienced ‌in expressing himself thru makeup. “I ‍had some trepidation about⁢ how‍ I wanted⁤ to express myself sometimes. ​There were days when I wanted ‌to wear some lipstick,‌ and I wouldn’t do it as ​of whatever the‍ status quo was,” he shared.This personal journey has informed his ‌commitment to ⁣creating a brand that empowers individuals ‌to embrace their authentic selves without fear of⁣ judgment or societal expectations.

Now, he ‍is building out​ the brand,⁢ manifesting a long-held dream. “I sort of have just been dreaming, and scheming, and manifesting, and ‍putting ⁣things out into the universe,” he said.
