Bio-Exorcising the Afterlife: A Hauntingly Hilarious Review of ‘Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice Review: A Horror Comedy with a Twist
I recently watched the dubbed version of Beetlejuice, and while I understood the story and gags, I only found one part truly laugh-out-loud funny. Despite being a horror comedy, the film’s humor fell flat for me.
The artist’s drawings were a highlight, showcasing some interesting and unique visuals. However, the grandmother character’s untimely demise was a shame, as she was one of the most intriguing characters. Her absence was deeply felt throughout the rest of the film.
The plot twist involving Beetlejuice’s ex-wife Dolores felt disconnected from the main storyline and was resolved all too easily. The bizarre boy’s appearance also seemed unnecessary and lacked any real impact on the plot.
the film’s lack of depth and character development made it feel like a light, unscary horror story with too much repetition and disturbing content.
Beetlejuice: A Sequel 35 Years in the Making
Directed by Tim Burton, Beetlejuice is a horror comedy that takes place 35 years after the events of the 1988 film. The story follows Beetlejuice, a 600-year-old bio-exorcist who runs a “human scare shop” in the afterlife.
Beetlejuice is still pining for Lydia, whom he once asked to marry but was unable to. Lydia, now a TV show host, uses her psychic abilities to help others, but struggles with her relationship with her daughter Astrid.
Astrid is a skeptic who doesn’t believe in ghosts and thinks her mother’s abilities are fake. However, when Dolores, Beetlejuice’s ex-wife, returns from the dead, Astrid finds herself trapped in the afterlife, and Lydia is forced to turn to Beetlejuice for help.
The Cast
The film features an all-star cast, including Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, Winona Ryder as Lydia, and Jenna Ortega as Astrid. Monica Bellucci joins the cast as Dolores, Beetlejuice’s ex-wife.
