Their findings, published in the journal Scientific Reports, confirm that the virus is not only present in Antarctica but is also directly causing mortality in these scavenging birds. Skuas play a crucial role in the Antarctic food web, acting as scavengers and predators and their decline could have cascading effects on the ecosystem.
The research team collected samples from wildlife across the South Shetland Islands, the northern Weddell Sea, and the Antarctic Peninsula, consistently finding H5N1 at all sites. While the virus had been previously detected in Antarctica, this study is the first to establish a causal link between the virus and animal deaths. Other animals, such as fur seals, tested positive for the virus, but their deaths were not attributed to it.
“As the expedition progressed, it became obvious quickly that skuas were a major victim,” said Ralph Vanstreels, co-senior author of the study from UC Davis. The virus appears to be causing a significant amount of suffering, with infected birds exhibiting neurological symptoms, falling from the air, and displaying erratic behavior.
