Birds of Prey: Embracing Compassion

Title: Wings of Empathy: Why We’re All In on the New Birds of Prey

In the vibrant world of DC Comics, the Birds of Prey have soared to new heights with their latest ongoing series, taking readers on a thrilling, unpredictable ride. Since the inception of DC’s ambitious DC All In initiative, this formidable fowl flock has stayed closer to home, undertakings missions that feel deeply personal, all while showcasing their strongest suit – compassion.

Writer Kelly Thompson, along with an exceptional team of artists, has transformed the Birds into a force to be reckoned with. They’ve navigated perilous journeys, from the mythical shores of Themyscira to the fluctuating terrain of a pocket dimension. Now, they’re tackling a more grounded, yet no less dangerous, threat in the most recent arc, "Bird Undercover" (Birds of Prey #14).

The stage is set with a missing persons case unlike any other – five Amazon warriors have vanished, and their queen, Nubia, enlists the Birds’ help. The trail leads them to the slick yet sinister Ninth Day corporation, where Batgirl Cassandra Cain goes undercover. Little does she know, plans are about to take a 달라 (dalla) – a seismic shift in Korean that practically explodes with unexpected turns.

At the heart of this high-stakes, high-emotion arc, we find Barbara Gordon, Big Barda, Sin, Black Canary, grace Choi, and Onyx – a lineup so impressive it’s enough to make any comics fan ready to dive in, all in. But it’s not just their superpowers that make them special; it’s their bonds, their empathy, and their unwavering commitment to protecting the innocent.

Thompson masterfully weaves formidable action with tender moments of camaraderie, highlighting the Birds’ emotional intelligence – particularly that of Black Canary, who’s not just a powerhouse in combat but also an extraordinary leader. Her pep talks alone can soothe even the most fazed-out comrade (we’re looking at you, Big Barda).

Meanwhile, Cassandra Cain continues her remarkable transformation from would-be assassin to bonafide hero. When faced with a monstrous creature, she chooses kindness over brute force, proving that there’s more than one path to heroism.

As the story reaches its climax, the Birds uncover the Ninth Day’s heinous experiments on the missing Amazons, turning them into mind-controlled super soldiers. It’s a tense, heart-wrenching battle to save their friends – and for a moment, it seems all hope is lost. But in true Birds of Prey fashion, it’s not their thunderous punches that save the day. Instead, it’s Barda’s kind words, a gentle reminder of the love and friendship they share.

The ‘Birds of Prey’ is now cruising into its second year, and we couldn’t be more excited. This ongoing series brilliantly brings together a rotating roster of heroes, each with their unique skills, backgrounds, and superpowers. Yet, they all share a common thread – a fierce dedication to protecting the innocent, guided by their compassionate hearts. That’s why we’re all in on this run.
