Birmingham City Win Despite Mixed Season & Champions League Success

Birmingham City have been crowned League One champions for the 2024-2025 season, a remarkable turnaround for the club that secured promotion back to the Championship in midweek. The title was confirmed on Saturday, April 12, 2025, not through their own play, but by a goalless draw between Wrexham and Wigan Athletic.

Blues had already secured their return to the Championship with a 2-1 victory over Peterborough United during the week, but Wrexham remained the only team capable of surpassing Chris Davies’ side in the league standings. However, Wrexham’s inability to find the back of the net at the Brick Community Stadium sealed Birmingham’s fate and delivered them the League One title – their first league title since winning the old Second Division in the 1994-95 season.

The Birmingham squad is currently in London preparing for the Vertu Trophy final, also against Peterborough United, scheduled for Sunday. They last won the Vertu Trophy in 1995 under the management of Barry Fry. Over 40,000 fans are expected to travel to Wembley Stadium to celebrate the double triumph, marking the culmination of a dominant season that saw Birmingham return to the Championship at the first attempt.

The success is a significant validation of the £25 million investment in player transfers made by the club’s owners, Knighthead. The owners are also funding the construction of a new, Premier League-standard stadium located a mile from the current St Andrew’s ground.

Birmingham set a new third-tier record during the season by signing England Under-21 international Jay Stansfield for an eight-figure sum. Further bolstering the squad were the acquisitions of Christoph Klarer and Willum Thor Willumsson, both brought in for substantial fees, following the team’s relegation from the Championship last season.

The club’s promotion and championship win comes after a period of uncertainty. The season represents a significant rebuild for Birmingham City, and a swift return to form following their relegation.

News of Birmingham’s success has already generated considerable excitement, with a documentary crew from Amazon following the team’s journey to Wembley. The club’s resurgence is a story of ambition, investment, and triumph on the pitch.

As of February 5, 2026, Birmingham City is enjoying success in the Sky Bet Championship, having been promoted from League One.
