Counting of votes for five Assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha seat across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Puducherry began at 8 a.m. on October 9, 2026, following elections held on October 6. The early returns show the Bharatiya Janata Party widening its leads in West Bengal while actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam takes an initial advantage in Tamil Nadu.

The electoral contests serve as a crucial gauge for multiple political parties, testing the ruling regime in West Bengal under the BJP and marking an early electoral test for Vijay’s TVK in Tamil Nadu following the resignation of former AIADMK MLAs who joined the party. Regional dynamics also play out in Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha seat and Puducherry’s Thattanchavady Assembly constituency, where vote tabulation proceeds under security arrangements at designated counting centers.

Early Lead Shifts Across Bengal And Tamil Nadu Bypolls

In West Bengal, the BJP has surged ahead in both the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly seats. BJP candidate Shankharavh Sarkar led by 20,000 votes against AJUP candidate Golam Nabi Azad after the third round of counting in Rejinagar. In Nandigram, BJP candidate Hasi Rani Rath secured a substantial lead, recording 66,415 votes against Congress candidate Milan Pradhan’s 16,493 votes by the sixth of 15 counting rounds.

In Tamil Nadu, early trends give an advantage to the ruling regime led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, drawing significant attention in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram contests. Concurrently, in Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha seat, BJP candidate Devasish Sharma opened a lead of 43,418 votes against AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, who secured 48,927 votes. In Puducherry, ruling AINRC candidate Ashok Anand defeated Congress candidate E. Vinayagam by over 8,400 votes in Thattanchavady, where voter turnout reached 80.81 percent.

Irregularity Allegations And Demands For Rejinagar Repoll

The counting process in West Bengal’s Rejinagar constituency faced formal opposition prior to the opening of ballot boxes. The Murshidabad district Congress Committee urged Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to halt vote counting for Rejinagar and order a fresh poll, citing alleged widespread irregularities. District Congress president and candidate Abdullahil Kafi claimed that voters were denied their franchise and accused BJP candidate Sakharav Sarkar of unauthorized entry into a restricted voting compartment at the 12-Majlishpur Rural Library polling station.

The Congress released video footage showing Sarkar entering the polling station with a bodyguard and walking behind the curtain where the electronic voting machine was kept. Sarkar rejected the allegations, stating that he entered the booth solely due to complaints of an EVM malfunction, did not touch the machine, and kept his hands behind his back in the footage. Sarkar asserted that the Congress fabricated the accusations because the party anticipated defeat.

Hasi Rani Rath Leads Milan Pradhan in Vote Count

Vote counting continues through the day at respective centers under established security arrangements, with results expected to be officially declared as tabulation concludes across all constituencies. The Election Commission of India provides constituency-wise updates on its official results portal, where final data for each Assembly seat will be formally published in Form 20 following complete verification.
