Karnataka BJP Leader Arrested After Heated Exchange in State Legislature
Belagavi, Karnataka – In a dramatic turn of events, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLC CT Ravi was arrested Thursday evening from the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi. The arrest followed a complaint filed by Karnataka Women and Child Welfare Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar, who accused Ravi of making derogatory remarks against her during a heated debate in the Legislative Council.

Police registered a first Facts Report (FIR) against Ravi under Sections 75 and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for sexual harassment and using insulting gestures amounting to sexual harassment. Ravi was taken into custody while participating in a protest with other BJP members and was subsequently transported in a police van.
Hebbalkar also lodged a formal complaint with Legislative Council Chairperson Basavaraj Horatti.
The incident sparked immediate outrage from the BJP. Leader of the opposition R.Ashoka condemned the arrest, calling it “goondagiri” by the Congress party. he alleged that Ravi was assaulted on the floor of the House and that Horatti had ruled that no such incident occurred.
“We don’t know whether a law and order system exists in the state. We will protest,” Ashoka declared.
horatti, while acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, urged introspection from all members.
“I have spoken to Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar and BJP MLC CT Ravi regarding the matter. The issue has been closed. I am the custodian of the House, and I take responsibility for its smooth functioning,” Horatti stated.
The arrest triggered protests across Karnataka.Congress workers attempted to enter Ravi’s residence in chikkamagaluru, but police barricades prevented them. Demonstrations also erupted in Bengaluru and Belagavi.
The controversy spilled over into the Legislative Assembly, where Congress MLA Sharat Bache Gowda raised the issue. However, Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka objected, citing horatti’s ruling on the matter.Law Minister HK Patil defended Hebbalkar,stating that obscene language was used and that the minister was insulted.
“This is a heinous act. members must respect each other, and their protection is the duty of the government,” Patil emphasized.
The arrest follows a heated debate in the Council earlier in the day, during wich Ravi allegedly referred to Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi as a “drug addict.”
