Two Performances Scheduled at Centro de Bellas Artes
The group will perform two shows at the Festival Hall of the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce on Sunday, April 13, with performances at 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Due to high demand,a second show was added after the initial performance quickly sold out, according to Mellado pro,the production company in charge.
Singer Expresses Excitement for return
“The truth is that we are not surprised, as we certainly no that the Puerto Rican public enjoys good music and is a very warm audience,” said Jhonny Antonio Saavedra, the band’s lead singer, in a phone interview from Mexico City. “Puerto Rico was an significant place that the group visited in the 1970s, and one that we always respected a lot, so we are very anxious to introduce ourselves in front of them.”
A History Spanning Decades
Los Angeles Negros formed in late 1967 in San Carlos, Chile. Mario Gutiérrez and his schoolmates Cristian blasser, federico Blasser, and Luis Alarcón created the group initially to compete in a local contest. Germaín de la Fuente joined during rehearsals, initially as a keyboardist but later as the lead singer, thanks to his vocal talent. This lineup won first place in a contest in Chillán, earning them the opportunity to record their first album in 1968, featuring their breakthrough hit, “Porque te quiero” (“Why I Love You”).
By the end of 1968, Los Angeles Negros had achieved widespread popularity in Chile, leading to a record deal with Odeon. Following the initial recording, Sergio Rojas, René Torres, and Jorge Villarroel departed for personal reasons. Nano Concha, Jorge González, and Luis Ortiz joined, bringing experience that helped the group mature. This new formation embarked on an international tour, achieving success throughout Latin America with songs like “Y Volvere,” “La Flor Murio” (“The Flower Died”), and “Mi Niña” (“My Girl”).
The band has seen several lineup changes over the years, including the departure of Germaín de la Fuente in 1974 to pursue a solo career. The current lineup includes mexican musicians Danny Navarro,Víctor Bonifaz,Pepe Escalante,Raúl Gasca,Giovanni Pérez, and jaziel Muñoz,alongside Chilean vocalist Jhonny Antonio, who joined in 2000. Together, they continue to perform the band’s classic hits.
Legacy Continues Through Touring and Tribute
“We stayed constantly touring Mexico and other countries in Latin America, and we have managed to continue carrying in our shows the legacy left by teachers who are no longer with us in this life, such as Mario Gutiérrez, Luis Astudillo, and Ismael Montes, among many others,” Saavedra said.
Over the years, the music of Los Angeles Negros has been covered by numerous international artists, including Raphael, José josé, Lucero, José Luis Rodríguez, Vikki Carr, María marta Serra Lima, Los Panchos, Celia Cruz, Los Tigres del Norte, Los Broncos, Olga Guillot, and Café Tacuba. Anglo-Saxon artists such as Beastie Boys, Jay Z, and Damian Marley have also recorded versions of their songs.
new Generation Embraces Classic Sound
Audiences at the San Juan shows can expect to see a new generation of musicians bringing a modern sound to the classic songs of Los Angeles Negros.According to the musicians, they are seeing more young people at their shows who know and sing along to the group’s most emblematic songs.
“It is indeed increasingly common to see young people present in our shows, perhaps accompanying their parents, but that our songs are also known, and it is very beautiful, and that causes me great emotion,” said Danny Navarro, the band’s drummer for four years.”That lets you see that music is worldwide and that happens from generation to generation.”
Continuing a 57-Year Journey
As they have for 57 years, Los Angeles negros will continue playing their hits, cherishing every moment. “During all these years, we have had wonderful memories, that many of my colleagues were taken to heaven, and memories that I have in my heart. We hope that it will be in Puerto Rico,” added Saavedra, who will continue his tour in the United States after the Puerto Rico shows. “In Puerto Rico there is a lot.”
Tickets for the Los Angeles Negros show are available at TicketCenter and at the box office of the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce.
