Celebrating the Legacy of the Black Cowboy: A Look at Peacock‘s ”High Horse”
What is “High Horse: The Black cowboy”?
Cowboys, cowgirls and creators alike gathered at the scenic Los Angeles Equestrian Center this week, dressed in radiant all-white attire, to celebrate the release of High Horse: The Black Cowboy. This three-part documentary, available on Peacock, delves into the often-untold history and enduring legacy of Black cowboys and cowgirls in the American West.
Executive produced by Jordan Peele through his Monkeypaw Productions, High Horse isn’t just a historical recounting. It’s a vibrant exploration backed by an original score from Raphael Saadiq, and features commentary from Peele himself, alongside cultural icons like Pam Grier, glynn Turman, Lori harvey, Bun B, Blanco Brown, and Tina Knowles (Cécred vice chairperson).
The Historical Context: Why This Story Matters
For generations, the contributions of Black individuals to the growth of the American West have been marginalized or erased from mainstream narratives. The reality is that approximately one in four cowboys were Black following the Civil War. Freedmen, seeking economic possibility and a life beyond the constraints of the post-war South, found work as cowboys, ranchers, and pioneers. They faced discrimination and hardship, but their skills and resilience were vital to the cattle industry.
High Horse aims to rectify this historical imbalance, bringing to light the stories of these frequently enough-forgotten figures. The documentary explores the challenges they faced, the communities they built, and the lasting impact they had on Western culture.
The Celebration: Black Excellence Brunch
The release event, a “Black Excellence Brunch” held at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, embodied the spirit of the documentary. Guests enjoyed peach tea (with optional spirits) and personalized Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whiskey bottles. The event was helmed by Trell Thomas, founder of Black Excellence Brunch and a native of South Carolina, who intentionally created a “Sunday dinner” atmosphere to honor Black history and pride.

Keisha Senter, SVP of Culture and Impact at Monkeypaw Productions, emphasized the synergy between the documentary and the brunch. “The Black excellence Brunch celebrates Black people, Black culture and Black traditions on a major platform,” she stated to EBONY. “The partnership felt like a natural alignment.”
