The New Zealand Black Ferns have announced exciting outside back Mererangi Paul as an injury replacement for Amy du Plessis ahead of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025. Du Plessis will unfortunately miss the remainder of the tournament due to a shoulder injury sustained during the black Ferns’ opening match against Spain.

Experienced Midfielder Joins the Squad

Black Ferns Director of Performance, Allan bunting, expressed support for du Plessis, noting her valuable contributions to the campaign. He also welcomed Paul, highlighting her talent and experience. Paul is a versatile player capable of covering the midfield, and her addition is expected to bolster the team’s dynamic.

From Netball to Rugby Stardom

Mererangi Paul brings a unique athletic background to the Black Ferns, having previously excelled as a professional netball player. Since making her debut against Australia in 2023, where she scored two tries, Paul has earned 12 test caps for New Zealand. Her extraordinary performance lead to a nomination for the World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year award in the same year.

Whakatāne Roots and Super Rugby Aupiki Experience

Born and raised in Whakatāne as one of seven siblings, Paul initially honed her skills in sevens rugby before joining Counties Manukau. In 2022, she was selected for the Chiefs Manawa in Super Rugby Aupiki, further demonstrating her rapid rise through the ranks of New Zealand rugby.
