Blackhawks Sign Frank Nazar To Seven-Year Extension
The Chicago Blackhawks have secured forward Frank nazar’s future, signing him to a ample seven-year contract extension commencing in the 2026-27 season. The deal carries an average annual value (AAV) of $6.59 million, totaling $46.13 million over its duration. The contract structure is unique, consisting entirely of base salary with varying amounts each year: $9.1MM (2026-27), $8.66MM (2027-28), $6.6MM (2028-29), $5.46MM (2029-30), $5.46MM (2030-31), $5.46MM + a 20-team no-trade clause (2031-32), and $5.46MM + a 20-team no-trade clause (2032-33).

This is a significant investment in the 21-year-old Nazar, notably given his limited NHL experience. The contract represents the highest total value awarded to a player with 56 or fewer career NHL games – Nazar’s current total. This demonstrates the blackhawks’ strong belief in his potential.
Currently finishing his entry-level contract, nazar has shown promising development despite not yet establishing himself as a full-time NHLer. After a strong collegiate career at the University of Michigan,he transitioned to the AHL’s Rockford icehogs, where he quickly demonstrated his offensive capabilities, recording 11 goals and 24 points in 21 games. A mid-season recall to Chicago saw him find his footing under interim coach Anders Sörenson, culminating in a 12-goal, 26-point season in 53 games.
Nazar’s versatility is also noteworthy. While listed as a center, he’s demonstrated the ability to play effectively on the wing, even seeing time alongside star center Connor Bedard. He frequently played on a line with Tyler Bertuzzi and Teuvo Teräväinen, showcasing his adaptability within the Blackhawks’ forward group. Despite concerns about his size (5’10”, 190 lbs), he’s proven capable of handling a top-six role.
Originally a top-10 prospect in the 2022 draft, Nazar overcame early injury setbacks to become a key contributor for the Blackhawks. This extension reflects not only his on-ice performance but also the team’s confidence in his continued growth. The Blackhawks, with considerable cap space projected for the future (over $40MM allocated for 2026-27 with a projected $104MM cap), are clearly positioning themselves to build around young talent like Nazar, making this a strategic investment in their long-term success.
