East Carolina University has announced the addition of guard Brycen Blaine to its men’s basketball roster for the upcoming season, confirming his transfer from Charleston Southern University. The move was first reported by 247Sports and later confirmed by ECU athletics officials. Blaine, a 6-foot-3 guard, played one season with the Buccaneers before entering the transfer portal.
During his lone season at Charleston Southern, Blaine appeared in 31 games, starting 28 of them. He averaged 10.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per contest. His most notable performance came in a non-conference matchup against ECU, where he scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in Charleston Southern’s 77-65 victory over the Pirates on December 17, 2023. That game took place at the HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina.
ECU head coach Michael Schwartz praised Blaine’s scoring ability and defensive versatility in a statement released by the university. “Brycen is a competitive guard who can score in multiple ways and guard multiple positions,” Schwartz said. “His experience in the Big South Conference will help us immediately, and we’re excited to see how he fits into our system moving forward.”
Blaine’s arrival addresses a need for backcourt depth at ECU, which lost several key guards to graduation and transfer after the 2023-24 season. The Pirates finished last season with a 15-16 overall record and 8-10 mark in American Athletic Conference play. ECU is expected to rely on Blaine to provide instant offensive production and leadership as a veteran presence in the locker room.
Prior to college, Blaine attended Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, where he was a four-star recruit according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. He initially committed to Wake Forest before choosing Charleston Southern, where he redshirted his first year. Now, with one year of eligibility remaining under NCAA transfer rules, Blaine has the opportunity to make an immediate impact for the Pirates beginning in the 2024-25 season.
ECU’s athletics department has not yet announced Blaine’s official jersey number or role in the starting lineup. The team is scheduled to begin official practices in early October, with the season opener set for November 6 against a non-conference opponent to be announced. Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how Blaine adapts to the faster pace and higher level of competition in the American Athletic Conference.
