Blake Lively’s Taylor Swift texts Could Be Key in Justin Baldoni Legal Fight
Updated June 20, 2025
Blake Lively’s legal dispute with “It Ends with Us” co-star Justin Baldoni has taken a new turn. A judge is considering allowing Baldoni’s legal team to access text messages between Lively and her friend, Taylor Swift. The messages could play a significant role in the ongoing case.
U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman issued an order Wednesday, denying Lively’s request to shield her communications with Swift from the litigation. The judge stated that as Lively indicated Swift had knowledge of workplace complaints related to the film, the messages are “reasonably tailored” to either support or refute Lively’s claims of harassment and retaliation.
Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios initially requested access to these texts in February, seeking all documents and communications reflecting Lively’s exchanges with Swift regarding the 2024 romantic drama and subsequent legal actions.
The legal battle between Lively and Baldoni began after Lively accused Baldoni of sexual harassment on the set of “It Ends With Us” in December. She also alleged a smear campaign orchestrated by his team. Lively formally sued Baldoni in federal court on Dec. 31. That same day,Baldoni and nine othre plaintiffs filed a $400 million countersuit against lively and her husband,Ryan Reynolds, along with a separate defamation complaint against The New York Times.
Earlier this month, Liman dismissed Baldoni’s complaints, citing their failure to meet legal standards.
Liman stated in Wednesday’s order that Lively’s concern was that Baldoni’s team was using the request for communications with Swift ”not to obtain data relevant to claims and defenses in court, but to prop up a public relations narrative outside of court.” The judge also denied Baldoni’s motion to compel Lively to produce documents related to the film’s production.
Baldoni’s team had previously subpoenaed Swift but withdrew it after swift’s representatives called it an “unwarranted fishing expedition.”
A representative for Lively stated that Baldoni’s desire to involve Taylor Swift “has been constant dating back to august 2024” and is an attempt to influence Swift’s fan base. The representative added, “We will continue to call out Baldoni’s relentless efforts to exploit Ms. Swift’s popularity, which from day one has been nothing more then a distraction from the serious sexual harassment and retaliation accusations he and the Wayfarer parties are facing.”
What’s next
The court will now determine the extent to which Lively’s text messages with Swift will be admissible as evidence as the legal proceedings continue.
