California Eagles Hit the US…and Prepare for “European Champions”
The Saudi Gulf handball team scored a decisive victory over its American opponents, the California Eagles, with a score of “48-25” in its opening match at the Club World Cup tournament held in Cairo, the capital of Egypt.
Despite the Gulf team’s modest start and four goals late in the first quarter of the match, it succeeded in regaining its balance and ended the first half with a score of “22 – 16”.
In the second half, the Gulf imposed its superiority from the start and continued to increase the gap until the American team collapsed and surrendered to the result, because it did not succeed in scoring more than “9”.
Bahrain’s Hussain Al-Sayad won the man of the match award.
This is the first win for the Gulf at the World Championships outside the Kingdom, as it is his third participation in the tournament after two participations in Saudi Arabia where he finished sixth.
Al-Khaliz will face German side Magdeburg, the European and world champions, in their next group match.
