Two Dead, Three Critically Injured in Marlborough Crash

A two-vehicle crash near Blenheim, New Zealand, has resulted in two fatalities and left three individuals in critical condition, emergency services confirmed on Sunday, February 22, 2026. The incident occurred on State Highway 1, near Redwood Pass, at approximately 10:30 am and 10:40 am, according to reports.

Police responded to the scene, describing the collision as involving a car and a campervan. Despite the efforts of first responders, two people were pronounced dead at the scene. A police spokesperson stated, “Despite best efforts by emergency services, two people died at the scene.”

Hato Hone St John mobilized a significant response, dispatching four helicopters, three ambulances, two managers, and a major incident support team vehicle. Two critically injured patients were airlifted to Wellington Hospital, while another was transported to Christchurch Hospital, also in critical condition.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) crews were also involved, working to extricate individuals who were trapped within the vehicles.

State Highway 1 was temporarily closed following the crash, causing significant disruption for travelers between Marlborough, and Canterbury. Motorists were advised to detour via an inland route, which added an estimated two to three hours to their journey. The highway has since reopened with temporary speed limits in place.

The Serious Crash Unit has been notified and will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved, pending notification of next of kin.

The incident underscores the ongoing risks associated with travel on New Zealand roadways. Emergency services continue to urge drivers to exercise caution and adhere to road safety guidelines.
