Following Maryland’s departure from Mike Locksley after eight seasons, national analysts have identified Jason Eck, Jake Dickert, and Charles Huff as top candidates for the team’s head coaching position.

Top Candidates Emerge in College Park

National college football writers Stewart Mandel and Ralph Russo outlined the primary contenders for the vacancy on their podcast, The Audible. Russo stated that multiple sources indicate the three names atop Maryland’s list are Jason Eck of New Mexico, Jake Dickert of Wake Forest, and Charles Huff of Memphis.

Russo identified Huff as the most likely candidate to accept the job if offered, noting that the coach is a Maryland native who played at Hampton and previously worked as an assistant at Penn State. Mandel described Huff as a coach who has climbed the ladder aggressively, pointing to his results at Marshall and Southern Miss after taking over programs that finished 1-11 the year prior.

Contrasting Views on Fit and Urgency

Analysts expressed varying opinions on whether the identified candidates should take the job. Russo called Eck a Big Ten guy due to his background playing offensive line at Wisconsin and his physical coaching style at Idaho and New Mexico, predicting that Eck would become a significant challenge for opposing teams in the conference.

I think he’s going to be a huge problem in the Big Ten because I think he’s that good of a coach.

Ralph Russo

At the same time, Mandel noted that coaches at Group of Five programs face mounting pressure from roster raids that make sustained success difficult from year to year, creating urgency to move when jobs open. However, Mandel and Russo also highlighted potential hesitation among candidates. Several sources suggested that waiting a year could yield more stable opportunities, given that Maryland has not recorded a winning conference record since joining the Big Ten.

Evaluating Dickert and Program Hurdles

Dickert represents a tougher pursuit for Maryland, according to Russo, who cited a 9-4 finish at Wake Forest last season and a team ranked No. 17 this year. Mandel remarked that while Wake Forest operates with lower roster spending than top ACC programs, Dickert would likely weigh whether trading his current post for the bottom of the Big Ten makes career sense.

Bruce Feldman added on the podcast that Maryland has struggled to find a sustainable winning formula in conference play since the tenure of Ralph Friedgen. As the search proceeds, the program faces the task of convincing a rising coach to take over a challenging rebuilding project in College Park.
