Blindboy & Robert Sheehan’s Epic Adventure in Storyland: A Journey of Creativity and Imagination

Blindboy & Robert Sheehan’s Epic Adventure in Storyland: A Journey of Creativity and Imagination

November 16, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Entertainment

Blindboy’s stories often contain flawed but human characters. One such character is Erskine Fogarty. In 2009, he loses everything—his job, family, and home—except for his double wide American fridge freezer. He returns to Limerick to show his old neighbors he is still important.

We began writing the film adaptation over two years ago. Adaptations require staying true to the story while fitting it into a new format. We focused on showing Erskine’s emotional journey visually. We always envisioned Robert Sheehan as Erskine because he can convey deep emotions. To our surprise, he agreed to take the role and delivered a brilliant performance.

‘Working with Rob was so much fun.’

We filmed entirely in Limerick. This choice was essential because Blindboy’s stories are deeply connected to this place. Filming elsewhere would have removed the essence of the story. Limerick offers diverse locations—city, river, and countryside—all close together. The support from local people was invaluable, and their contributions made the film possible.

The cast, the crew, and the story are top notch, so if this isn’t good, it’s on me.

Our producer, Sharon Cronin, assembled an amazing team of experienced professionals. They worked hard to tell Erskine’s story despite the challenges of making a low-budget period film about a man dragging a fridge.

The filming had many highlights: shutting down Henry Street, launching a raft into the Shannon, and shooting a dream sequence inside a fridge. Working with talented actors like Rob, Peter Coonan, Siobhan O’Kelly, Lalor Roddy, and newcomers Robyn Dempsey and Thomas O’Halloran was unforgettable.

‘Ever since Blindboy published his first book of short stories,
we’ve had it in the back of our heads to adapt one into a film.’

Thomas portrays Titmilk, one of Erskine’s old friends. He improvised lines that sounded just like Blindboy’s writing.

Working with Rob was enjoyable. His talent and ability to express complex emotions are remarkable. He is one of Ireland’s best actors.

Post-production moved quickly because we had to finish filming close to the release date. Blindboy composed the soundtrack. The music enhances the story’s emotional impact.

I hope we created something special. The cast, the crew, and the story are outstanding. If it doesn’t succeed, I take full responsibility.
