BlizzCon 2026 returned to the Anaheim Convention Center in California, bringing a sweeping array of announcements across major franchises including StarCraft, Diablo, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft, according to coverage from El Periódico and Espanatimes. Blizzard Entertainment company president Johanna Faries opened the presentation by thanking players for their ongoing support before detailing a multi-year roadmap for the studio’s key intellectual properties.
StarCraft Returns as an Open-World Shooter
The most prominent surprise of the opening ceremony was a major pivot for the StarCraft franchise, as Blizzard confirmed development on a new open-world shooter set in the Koprulu sector. According to Espanatimes, the project is scheduled for release in spring 2030 and is led by Dan Hay, a Ubisoft veteran known for his work on the Far Cry series. The studio has not yet revealed an official subtitle or granular gameplay mechanics for how the classic science fiction universe will translate into an open-world combat framework.
Diablo Prepares for Its Thirtieth Anniversary and Diablo V
Diablo occupied a substantial portion of the event as the franchise approaches its thirtieth anniversary, highlighted by the announcement of Diablo V. Scheduled for a spring 2029 release, the upcoming installment will depict a grim narrative state where Diablo has triumphed and the heroes of Sanctuary have fallen, according to Espanatimes. Ahead of that release, Diablo IV will arrive on Nintendo’s Switch 2 hardware on September 15, 2026, launching alongside the Season of Hell’s Legacy update, which brings back the Prime Evils and Deckard Cain. Furthermore, the Amazon class will return to Diablo IV in the first half of 2027, bringing her signature javelins from the island of Skovos. Beyond the core games, Blizzard also announced an upcoming Netflix animated project set in the Diablo universe, though details regarding the plot, cast, and premiere date remain unannounced.
Overwatch Celebrates Ten Years With Hero 54
Marking its tenth anniversary, Overwatch introduced Doctrine, a vampire-inspired support hero wielding a scepter, life-force manipulation abilities, and bat-shaped drones. According to Espanatimes, Doctrine joins the roster as the 54th hero during Season 5. The update will also include gameplay reworks for Sombra—transitioning the character from the damage role to support—and Roadhog, alongside a new escort map named Observatorio Grimsvötn and the conclusion of the Talon Reign storyline.

Updates for Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone, and World of Warcraft
Heroes of the Storm is receiving its first new character in nearly six years with the addition of Xal’atath. The new heroine enters the Nexus on September 28, 2026, following a public test realm preview starting September 14, 2026. In Hearthstone, the upcoming expansion titled The Rise of the Black Empire launches on October 20, 2026, bringing players to ancient Azeroth under the rule of Old Gods like C’Thun, N’Zoth, Yogg-Saron, and Y’Shaarj.
