Appalachian High School Shooting: A Tragic Event that Raises Questions about Gun Control
Winder, a small town with a population of around 18,000, is located 80km north-east of Atlanta, Georgia, USA. On September 4, 2024, a tragic event occurred at Appalachian High School, leaving two students and two teachers dead, and nine others injured.
The incident began when freshman Colt Gray, 14, left his classroom and appeared holding a semi-automatic rifle (AR-15). The resident police officer on campus radioed the local police, and between 10:20 and 26 pm, Gray opened fire. He soon turned himself in to campus police and was handed over to local police.
Investigation Reveals Gray’s Troubling Past
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Gray was under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 2023 on charges of posting a threatening message on social media. The GBI investigation also revealed that Gray was a person of interest in the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting incident in Parkland, Florida on February 14, 2018.
Gray was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and was tried as an adult. His father, Colin Gray, 54, was also charged with second-degree murder and child endangerment for buying the gun used in the crime for his son as a Christmas present in 2023.
The Second Amendment and Gun Control
The Second Amendment to the Constitution, ratified by Congress on December 15, 1791, states that the possession of firearms is a “fundamental right.” However, the debate around gun control has been ongoing, with some arguing that it is an unfair infringement on individual liberties.
Reactions from Presidential Candidates
The Appalachian High School incident has made gun control a key issue in the upcoming presidential election. Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have taken different stances on the issue.
Former President Trump defined the incident as the “deviance of an individual (monster)” and announced that he would repeal all gun control regulations if he were returned to power. Vice President Harris, on the other hand, has been actively promoting “lethal weapons regulation” and banning the general sale of firearms similar to those used by the military.
A History of School Shootings
On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold went on a shooting spree at Columbine High School in Colorado, killing 12 students and one teacher. Since then, there have been 416 school shootings in the United States, with the average age of the shooter being 16.
