On Saturday evening, September 21, a devastating mass shooting occurred in Birmingham, Alabama, resulting in the loss of four lives and injuring 18 others.
Scene of the Shooting
The incident took place around 11 p.m. in Five Points South, a bustling area with entertainment venues, restaurants, and bars, located in the 2000 Block of Magnolia Avenue South.
Police Response and Investigation
Local police rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the report. The Birmingham Police Department posted on social media: “The police are dealing with a multiple shooting incident, there may be multiple casualties.”
Police Chief Scott Thurmond stated at a news conference on Sunday morning that multiple suspects drove a car, got out of the car, fired at the crowd, then got back in the car and fled. He suggested that the shooting could have been a paid assassination.
Victims and Injuries
Two men and one woman were found shot dead at the scene, and another male victim died in the hospital. As of early Sunday morning, police had confirmed 18 people were injured, with at least four suffering life-threatening injuries.
Investigation and Official Response
Mayor Randall Woodfin and officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) attended the news conference. Investigators believe a target may be among the dead, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
