TORONTO—The Toronto Blue Jays’ center field position faces uncertainty after Jonatan Clase and Myles Straw both suffered injuries during Tuesday night’s game against the arizona Diamondbacks. The Blue Jays ultimately secured a 5-4 victory, but the cost was high.
Clase, who started in center field, left the game in the fourth inning after being struck on the right knee by a 93 mph sinker from Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Pfaadt. He initially remained in the game to run the bases, but was later diagnosed with a bruised right knee.
Straw, who took over the role in center field, then injured his right ankle in the fifth inning. While chasing a double hit by Josh naylor, Straw collided with the outfield wall. He was replaced by Alan Roden.
The sudden loss of two center fielders in quick succession puts the Blue Jays’ depth to the test. The role of center fielder is now open.
Naylor, visibly concerned, checked on Straw after the play. The two were teammates in Cleveland for four seasons.
“He’s a fierce competitor, incredible athlete,” Naylor said. “He’s a dear friend of mine and I just wanted to make sure he was OK… I hated to see him go down. He’s like a brother to me, so I just wanted to make sure he’s all right.”
Straw reciprocated the sentiment, calling Naylor “one of my best friends in the game” and expressing optimism about a quick return. He acknowledged the notable role Naylor plays as a friend.
“That’s just who he is,” Straw said of Naylor. “He’s a lover. He truly cares about everyone.”
What’s next
The blue Jays will evaluate Clase and Straw to determine the extent of their injuries and their availability moving forward. The team may need to explore options to fill the center field position in the interim.
