Gausman Struggles as Kansas City Launches Two Crucial home Runs
The Toronto blue Jays kicked off their weekend series against the Kansas City Royals with a palpable buzz, fueled by a raucous home crowd eager for a victory. unfortunately for the Blue Jays and their fans, that initial energy didn’t translate into a win, as the Royals secured a decisive 9-3 victory in the series opener.
Wacha Shines, Royals’ Bats Explode
Kansas City’s offense was powered by two pivotal home runs off Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman, while Royals counterpart Michael Wacha delivered a masterful performance on the mound. Wacha’s gem, his longest outing of the season, saw him twirl eight innings of shutout baseball, allowing just three hits, walking none, and striking out five. This dominant display kept the Blue Jays hitters off balance throughout the game.
The Blue Jays managed to draw first blood in the bottom of the first inning. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. continued his impressive season, launching a 1-1 sinker from Wacha into the second deck in left field for a solo home run. The blast, Guerrero Jr.’s 16th of the year, left his bat at a blistering 113.9 mph, but it proved to be the only significant damage the Blue Jays could inflict against the veteran right-hander.
The Royals quickly responded in the top of the second. Mikael Garcia singled, setting the stage for Mike Yastrzemski, who was making his Royals debut after being acquired from the Giants. Yastrzemski capitalized on a splitter Gausman left over the plate, sending it into the right field bullpen for a two-run shot.
Kansas City continued to apply pressure in the third inning. The bottom of the order came through with a crucial rally. Kyle Isbel ripped a fastball from Gausman for a leadoff single, followed by Jonathan India’s double into the right-center field gap. The inning culminated with Bobby Witt Jr. launching an inside splitter into the second deck in left field for a three-run home run, extending the Royals’ lead.
In total, Gausman surrendered five runs on six hits over six innings, walking none and striking out five. The Blue Jays’ offense, which has struggled recently, was unable to mount a significant comeback. Addison Barger did manage to hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning off Royals reliever Thomas Hatch, but by then, the game was effectively out of reach.
Blue Jays Lineup Shaken by Injuries
The Blue Jays’ lineup was notably without outfielder George Springer, who was placed on the seven-day injured list Friday afternoon due to concussion symptoms. Manager John Schneider indicated that Springer is “feeling better every single day, but just quite didn’t really check every single box.” Catcher Alejandro Kirk, also on the concussion list, saw action on Friday, catching seven innings for the triple-A Buffalo Bisons and collecting one hit in three at-bats. He could potentially rejoin the big-league club as early as sunday.
The loss marked the Blue Jays’ fifth in their last six games, dropping their season record to 64-47. They will look to rebound in the second game of the three-game set against the Royals.
