Shapiro was spotted making his way through the 500 level of the Rogers Center, high-fiving fans as he journeyed to the very last row to sit with hosts Johnny Giunta and Avery Chenier of the popular “Gate 14 Podcast.” The podcast, self-described as the “most electric” Jays podcast online, captured the moment on video.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. as Shapiro settled into his seat, Blue Jays third baseman Ernie Clement launched a three-run homerun, extending Toronto’s lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Jays president enthusiastically celebrated the hit alongside the fans in the “nosebleeds,” fully embracing the energy of the crowd.
Toronto ultimately secured a 5-1 win, adding another homerun courtesy of outfielder Daulton Varsho in the bottom of the eighth.
This isn’t the first collaboration between Shapiro and the Gate 14 Podcast. he previously appeared in person on an episode with Giunta and Chenier back in April, demonstrating a willingness to connect directly with the Blue Jays’ passionate fanbase.
Contract talks and Future with the Jays
Shapiro, who joined the Blue Jays’ front office in 2015 and signed a five-year extension in January 2021, is currently in the final year of his contract. Ahead of Tuesday’s game, he addressed the media, declining to comment on ongoing contract negotiations. Though, he expressed a strong desire to remain with the club, stating that team ownership shares that sentiment.
“They’ve been reciprocal in that desire,” Shapiro said, signaling a positive outlook for his future with the association.
Blue Jays Lead the American League
The Blue Jays’ win over the Cubs further solidifies their position as a top team in Major League baseball. Heading into Wednesday night’s game, Toronto boasts a 70-50 record, leading the American League and holding the second-best record in the league trailing only the Milwaukee Brewers.
this strong performance underscores the success of Shapiro’s leadership and the team’s overall strategy. The Blue Jays are poised for a strong finish to the season and a deep playoff run, with fans and leadership alike optimistic about the future.
