The Toronto Blue Jays signed veteran left-handed pitcher Patrick Corbin to a one-year contract on April 3, 2026, to provide necessary depth for a starting rotation depleted by injuries. The announcement followed the team’s 5-4 loss in 10 innings against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on April 3, 2026.
The deal is valued at $1 million in base salary, with the potential for an additional $1 million in incentives. Corbin, who is 36 years old, has been optioned to the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, where he will utilize the club’s Spring Training facilities to build up his game readiness.
Addressing Rotation Injuries
The acquisition comes as Toronto manages a wave of injuries to its starting pitching staff. Right-hander Cody Ponce is expected to miss significant time
after suffering a sprained anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during his first start. While Ponce avoided a full tear, it remains undetermined if surgery will be required.
Three other starters began the 2026 season on the injured list:
- Trey Yesavage is recovering from a right shoulder impingement.
- José Berríos is dealing with a right elbow stress fracture, though the organization believes he can pitch during the 2026 season.
- Shane Bieber is being managed cautiously following forearm fatigue experienced during the offseason.
Due to these absences, the Blue Jays’ active rotation currently consists of Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Max Scherzer, and Eric Lauer.
Corbin’s Experience and Recent Form
Corbin brings 13 seasons of Major League experience to the roster, having previously spent significant portions of his career with the Washington Nationals and Arizona Diamondbacks. He spent the 2025 season with the Texas Rangers, where he demonstrated continued durability by pitching 155 1/3 innings across 31 appearances, including 30 starts.
During the 2025 campaign with Texas, Corbin posted a 4.40 ERA. A two-time All-Star and World Series champion, Corbin has earned $146 million over the course of his professional career.
Recovery Timelines
The Blue Jays are monitoring the progress of their injured starters to determine when Corbin might be needed at the Major League level. Trey Yesavage appears to be the closest to returning; on April 3, 2026, Yesavage pitched 2 2/3 innings for the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out three over 44 pitches.
Because of Corbin’s service time, he had to approve his assignment to the minor leagues. He will remain in Dunedin until the team determines he is game-ready or until a spot opens in the rotation.
The move to add Corbin is part of a broader effort to stabilize the roster as Toronto attempts to return to the World Series after losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games in October 2025.
