EU Designates Blue Moon’s Nussir Project as Strategic for Copper Supply
Updated June 06, 2025
The EU Commission has designated Blue Moon Metals’ Nussir Project in northern Norway as a Strategic Critical Raw Material Project under the 2023 EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). This designation underscores the project’s importance in diversifying Europe’s critical mineral supply and reducing reliance on China for critical raw materials.
The Nussir Project, the first of its kind in Norway, is strategically located in Repparfjord, Kvalsund, Hammerfest Municipality, in Finnmark county. The EU Commission’s decision followed rigorous evaluations of the project’s technical, environmental, and social aspects, ensuring compliance with CRMA requirements. As a result, the project will receive enhanced support, including improved access to funding and political backing, to accelerate its progress as a source of primary copper.
Blue Moon Metals is also advancing its blue Moon zinc-gold-silver-copper project in the U.S. and the NSG copper-zinc-gold-silver project in norway. All three projects benefit from existing infrastructure, including roads and power, which supports their development.
“Being defined as a Critical Raw Material Act Strategic Project is yet another milestone for Nussir and a strong endorsement of the work done to date. This inclusion will open up new opportunities for the company,” said Christian Kargl-Simard, CEO of Blue Moon.
Kargl-Simard added that the company looks forward to working with the EU commission and stakeholders to maximize local and regional benefits, support Europe’s self-reliance for critical mineral supply, and contribute to the green energy transition.
What’s next
With the EU designation, the Nussir Project is poised to advance, potentially providing a clean copper supply to Europe for decades, powered by renewable energy sources.
