Jigar Shah, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Blue Shield of California, said the company chose to partner with Zocdoc due to their extensive experience in online appointment booking. The goal is to improve the member experience and simplify the process of scheduling care appointments.
Previously, Blue shield members had to contact doctor’s offices or use separate apps or websites to schedule appointments. While virtual care appointments were available through other platforms,they were not integrated into the “Find a Doctor” tool. The new partnership centralizes the appointment scheduling process, making it easier for members to access the care they need.
According to Zocdoc CEO and founder Dr. Oliver Kharraz, this is Zocdoc’s first collaboration with a health plan. He said it signifies the company’s expansion beyond its marketplace to power scheduling within health plans’ provider directories. Zocdoc is actively seeking similar partnerships with other payers to modernize the find-a-doctor experience.
Many patients struggle with outdated scheduling systems. A Zocdoc survey revealed that over half of patients who couldn’t reach their doctor by phone delayed care, and one-third gave up on scheduling altogether.Another survey from Kyruus Health indicated that 61% of consumers consider online appointment scheduling important when choosing a new provider.
