BMKG Warns of High Waves in North Sumatra Waters Until April 22
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has issued a warning for high waves in the waters of North Sumatra, including the area around Nias Island, effective until April 22, 2026. The alert comes as part of ongoing monitoring of oceanic conditions in the region, with wave heights expected to reach potentially dangerous levels for small vessels and coastal activities.
According to BMKG’s official statement, the warning is due to strong wind patterns and swell originating from the southern Indian Ocean, which are generating elevated sea states along the western coastline of Sumatra. Mariners, fishermen, and coastal communities are advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary sea travel, and secure vessels and equipment near shore.
The agency emphasized that wave heights could exceed 2.5 to 3.5 meters in open waters, with localized higher sets possible in exposed areas such as the Nias and Simeulue regions. These conditions increase the risk of capsizing, swamping, or loss of control for smaller boats, particularly those not designed for rough seas.
BMKG also noted that while no extreme weather systems such as tropical cyclones are currently present in the immediate vicinity, the combination of seasonal monsoon transitions and distant low-pressure systems is sustaining the swell. The public is urged to follow updates from official maritime weather channels and heed any port advisories issued by local authorities.
In previous similar events, disruptions to inter-island ferry services and delays in the delivery of goods to remote coastal communities have occurred. BMKG recommends that transportation operators review schedules and consider temporary suspensions if safety thresholds are approached.
The warning remains in effect until further notice, with BMKG stating it will continue to monitor atmospheric and oceanic indicators and update the public should conditions change before the April 22 expiration date. No casualties or incidents have been reported in connection with the current wave activity as of the latest advisory.
