The BMW Art Car World Tour continues its global journey with two significant new chapters, marking a historic debut in Romania and a return to Stockholm in April 2026. The tour features Alexander Calder’s pioneering BMW Art Car #1 from 1975 at the RAD Art Fair in Romania and Julie Mehretu’s BMW Art Car #20 at the Market Art Fair in Stockholm.
The presentation in Romania represents the first-ever display of Calder’s BMW Art Car #1 in the country, taking place from April 23 to 26 at the RAD Art Fair. This event marks a milestone in the tour’s expansion to new frontiers, bringing one of the most iconic works in the BMW Art Car Collection to Romanian audiences for the first time.
In Stockholm, the tour returns for its fifth consecutive partnership with the Market Art Fair, running from April 24 to 26. Julie Mehretu’s BMW Art Car #20 will be featured during this engagement, continuing a sustained collaboration between the BMW Art Car World Tour and one of Scandinavia’s premier contemporary art events.
With more than 55 stops already completed since March 2025, these presentations are part of what BMW describes as the largest exhibition project ever undertaken for the BMW Art Car Collection. The ongoing world tour has been showcasing the collection’s unique fusion of automotive engineering and artistic expression at prestigious museums and major art events worldwide.
The BMW Art Car Collection itself holds significant cultural legacy, dating back to 1975 when Alexander Calder created the first BMW Art Car. Since then, 20 artists have transformed BMW vehicles into what the collection describes as “rolling sculptures,” blending contemporary art with automotive design.
The dual presentations in Romania and Sweden highlight the tour’s commitment to expanding geographical reach while maintaining long-standing partnerships in key cultural hubs. By bringing Calder’s foundational work to new audiences in Romania and reinforcing ties with Stockholm’s art scene through Mehretu’s contribution, the tour advances its mission of global cultural engagement through the medium of automotive art.
As part of BMW Group’s broader cultural engagement initiatives, the Art Car World Tour serves as a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue between automotive innovation and contemporary artistic practice. The project continues to attract international attention at each stop, drawing audiences interested in both art and automotive heritage.
The April 2026 engagements in Romania and Sweden follow a pattern of strategic partnerships with established art fairs and cultural institutions. These collaborations allow the BMW Art Car Collection to reach diverse audiences while maintaining the integrity and visibility of the artworks in appropriate cultural contexts.
