Bob Costas Criticizes Media Outlets’ Coverage of donald trump
Legendary sportscaster Bob Costas has taken aim at several media organizations for their handling of stories related to former President donald Trump.
Speaking at Syracuse University on Monday, Costas called out ABC News‘ settlement with Trump over George Stephanopoulos’ comments regarding the E. Jean Carroll lawsuit. He also criticized Paramount for its attempts to settle a lawsuit related to “60 Minutes,” labeling both the ABC News settlement and the Paramount offer as a form of “ransom.”

According to Mediaite, Costas acknowledged that media companies are prone to errors and biases. However,he cautioned against automatically embracing Trump’s perspective as a corrective measure, arguing that Trump’s worldview is solely driven by self-interest.
“If the answer to that is MAGA media, if the answer to that is Donald Trump’s view of the world, which is only through a prism of what benefits him, there are no higher ideals,” Costas said.
Costas further argued that Trump’s presidency has led to a normalization of behavior that forces journalists to feign objectivity, even when there are not two legitimate sides to an issue.

Costas also suggested that networks should not feel obligated to provide a defense for Trump or his management in the name of balance.
“Look, if someone is contending that the Earth is flat, in order to appear objective, you are not required to say, ‘Well, maybe it might be oblong.’ No,it’s not,” he said. “Certain things are just true. And regrettably, something that’s true in America right now is that the president of the United States has absolutely no regard, and actually has contempt, for basic American principles and basic common decency.”

Costas was honored with the Fred Dressler Leadership Award, which recognizes individuals or organizations that have significantly contributed to the public’s understanding of the media, according to the Newhouse School’s website.
