Bob Menendez Reports to Prison‍ for Bribery Scheme

Former U.S. ⁣Sen. ⁣Bob⁣ Menendez, once a powerful​ figure in New Jersey politics, is now an inmate.The 71-year-old​ Democrat reported⁤ to FCI Schuylkill in Pennsylvania on Tuesday to begin serving ⁣his 11-year sentence for his role in a sprawling bribery scheme. Menendez, dubbed “Gold Bar Bob,” was convicted of accepting bribes in⁣ exchange⁤ for‍ political favors, including acting as ⁢an ​illegal foreign⁢ agent.

Menendez’s ⁢legal troubles stem ‍from a case where he​ was found ⁣to have ​used ‍his position on the ​Senate Foreign⁤ Relations Committee to benefit ‌foreign governments, including Egypt and⁢ Qatar. ‌In return, he and his wife, Nadine Menendez, received ⁤cash,​ gold bars, and other lavish ‍gifts.

Judge Sidney Stein, during sentencing, addressed Menendez directly: “Somewhere along the way, you became, I’m sorry to say, a corrupt politician.”

life behind bars at⁤ FCI Schuylkill will be ‌a stark contrast to Menendez’s previous life of influence.‍ The facility houses both a medium-security prison and a minimum-security camp. Menendez ‌is likely​ to seek placement in​ the minimum-security camp, wich ⁤offers more freedom‍ of movement. Inmates can purchase items from the commissary, such as shampoo for $8.55 and toothpaste for $13. Visits are limited to four per month, and dialog is restricted to letters ⁢and postcards.

Among the other inmates is Gurmeet⁣ Singh ⁣Dhinsa, known as⁤ the “Gas Station ⁤Gotti,” who was ⁢convicted of murder conspiracy⁢ related to tampering with ⁢gas pumps.

The FBI uncovered more than $486,000 in cash at ‌the Menendez’s residence,some stashed in his official jacket,along with 13⁣ gold bars valued at $150,000.

Menendez’s wife, Nadine Menendez, 58, was also​ convicted for her role in the ⁢bribery scheme and awaits sentencing in September. She was ‌seen with Menendez the day before he reported to​ prison.
