Bobby Liu lost four kilograms of body fat and reduced his waistline by seven centimeters in two months by shifting from a high-stress fitness regimen to a simplified routine centered on heavy compound lifts and a protein-adjusted diet. The 45-year-old fitness enthusiast discovered that reducing workout complexity produced better muscle-building and fat-burning results than his previous exhaustive programs.
Simplifying the Fitness Routine for Better Muscle Gains
For years, Liu struggled to build muscle despite heavy training inside the gym, leading previous trainers to blame his genetics and age. In May 2023, he partnered with personal trainer and nutritionist Adam Enaz to overhaul his strategy. Enaz advised Liu to eliminate overly complex diet and training schedules in favor of core movements and targeted macronutrients. This pared-down approach eliminated the time-heavy friction that previously made his routines difficult to maintain.
Four Weekly Weightlifting Sessions and Progressive Overload
Liu’s updated schedule involves weightlifting sessions four times per week focusing on full-body compound movements like deadlifts and bench presses, with minimal cardiovascular training. Each workout lasts a maximum of one hour. Liu applies the principle of progressive overload by increasing the weight lifted as soon as he reaches his maximum repetition target for a given exercise.
Targeting Macronutrients and Protein Intake
Alongside his lifting routine, Liu adjusted his dietary macronutrients to roughly 35 percent protein, 40 percent carbohydrates, and 25 percent fats. Rather than eliminating entire food groups, he focused on reaching adequate daily protein intake to support muscle synthesis, incorporating protein shakes and powders into his daily meals.
Liu expressed pride in his transformation, noting that he had never been so big and broad and had seen his abdominal muscles for the first time in his life.
