Rescue Efforts Update: Body Found Off Aran Islands

Rescue workers have found a body in the water while searching for two missing women off the west coast of Ireland. The body was discovered on Saturday morning near Inisheer, the smallest of the Aran Islands. It is now at University Hospital in Galway for identification and post mortem analysis.

Authorities believe the body belongs to a 45-year-old woman from Cork. She had been missing since last week, with her car found in Liscannor, a coastal village in west Clare, on Tuesday.

Search teams halted their efforts for this woman after the body was discovered. However, over 500 volunteers continue searching for Máire Ní Fhátharta, a 32-year-old who disappeared while swimming at Silverstrand, Barna, Galway, on Tuesday morning.

In a related incident, the body of 74-year-old songwriter Johnny Duhan was also found in Rusheen Bay shortly after he was reported missing. He passed away while swimming as he typically did each day. He was laid to rest in Killaan Cemetery in east County Galway recently.

Dense fog may have contributed to the tragic events on Tuesday. Gardaí, assisted by the Irish Coast Guard, RNLI, and Civil Defence, have been conducting searches since the incidents. They resumed their full-scale search on Saturday morning, covering a 45km stretch of coastline from Renville near Oranmore to Inverin in Connemara. Multiple boats, paddleboards, and kayaks are involved in these search efforts.
