Bodybuilding in Gaza: Mohamed Hatem’s Journey of Resilience Amid War

Bodybuilding in Gaza: Mohamed Hatem’s Journey of Resilience Amid War

November 21, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

As explosions echo in Gaza, 19-year-old Mohamed Hatem clings to a cracked wall outside a destroyed building. He practices muscle-ups, a demanding exercise that lifts his body weight above a bar. Lacking proper equipment, he uses a concrete wedge. For Hatem, bodybuilding offers a vital escape from the harsh reality of war.

Hatem lives in Khan Younis and has faced immense stress during the ongoing conflict, which has taken over 44,000 lives and led to severe food shortages. He has been displaced ten times and often struggles to find enough to eat. To cope, he creates makeshift weights from water canisters, bricks, and school bags. His workout space is a small room in his grandmother’s home, which has become his sanctuary amid chaos.

“My dream of building a strong body has faced unimaginable challenges,” Hatem explains, but he remains committed to his fitness journey. According to the UN, the war has caused deeply traumatic experiences, making survival in Gaza a struggle without relief.

Bodybuilding serves as Hatem’s source of mental strength. “Sports reduce the tension we live in,” he says. His Instagram page, “Gym Rat in Gaza,” showcases his workouts and meals, attracting over 183,000 followers worldwide. He uses English in his posts to connect with a broader audience, amplifying the Palestinian experience through his story.

Despite his obstacles, including reduced workout time from three hours to thirty minutes and weight loss from 58kg to 53kg due to food scarcity, Hatem presses on. He recalls a terrifying night when bombs fell near his home, leaving it in ruins. Yet he refuses to focus on tragedy; instead, he shares messages of resilience.

His Instagram features strength training clips, gaining millions of views. Hatem admires Chris Bumstead, a top bodybuilder, and hopes to emulate his success. “Even when resources are scarce, I still have the will,” he states.

When he can, Hatem travels to a gym in central Khan Younis to access proper equipment. He wants others to see their struggles and understand that strength can emerge even in hardship.

“I want to show resilience and inspire others,” he says. Hatem combines his passion for bodybuilding with a desire to spread hope through his journey in the midst of conflict.
