In a significant development in poultry health, Boehringer Ingelheim has expanded its Vaxxitek vaccine portfolio with the launch of Vaxxitek HVT+IBD+H5, a trivalent poultry vaccine offering protection against H5 avian influenza, Marek disease, and infectious bursal disease. This vaccine leverages the COBRA technology, providing broad protection against the most prevalent H5 clades, a critical factor in addressing the evolving challenges posed by bird flu.

“The launch of Vaxxitek HVT+IBD+H5 is another step forward in avian influenza prevention regarding both coverage and convenience,” said Taoufik Rawi, head of franchise, poultry, Boehringer Ingelheim, in a press release. “Our customers must keep their flocks thriving and protect their chickens from health threats. We help them through our new three-in-one vaccine which is quick and effective. It combines broad protection against the most prevalent H5 avian influenza clades and two major poultry diseases in just one shot.”

This new vaccine, which can be administered directly at the hatchery, ensures early protection for chicks, effectively addressing potential immunity gaps. This is a critical advantage as the recent bird flu outbreak has been a significant cause for soaring egg prices in the United States. The outbreak has led to the culling of approximately 158 million birds, which includes most egg-laying chickens, substantially reducing the national supply of eggs, chicken, and turkey. This situation not only affects the availability of poultry products but also creates significant economic ripples, with the average cost of a dozen eggs now often reported to have risen by up to $4.95 and is predicted to stay elevated.

Sample breakdowns of economic losses reported by farms and poultry producers include the expensive process such as disposal of carcasses, sanitizing of barns, and the time needed to raise new livestock to market age.

AP also reports preyed prices for consumer foods for consumer foods could climb even higher as there is no indication for when or if the price will stabilize.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has highlighted that bird flu can transmit to humans through airborne particles and consumption of raw poultry.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, workers with close contact to poultry, especially backyard bird flock owners, animal health professionals and producers, this holiday season health experts are predicating an increased risk of transmission into the human population.

There have been 70 confirmed cases of bird flu in humans this year. However, while the CDC has reported one death in Louisiana in January, the risk of human-to-human transmission remains low with no identified human-to-human transmission events. Most notably, health experts are reiterating safety protocols involving the handling of poultry such as washing hands with soap and water after handling poultry, to cook poultry thoroughly before consumption and to never eat poultry that is uncleaned or not refrigerated.

In light of recent scientific studies showing that the virus H5, is capable of infecting swamp deer, hikers are especially encouraged to refrain from close contact with wildlife.

This year in March, the FDA, in collaboration with industry, federal and state partners, launched research efforts into the detection of bird flu in dairy cattle. Come September, the FDA, in conjunction with the US Department of Agriculture, assured the dairy industry that pasteurization processes effectively inactivate the bird flu virus. Pasteurized milk was thus confirmed to pose no public health risk.

Last month, the federal government released a statement encouraging pet food manufacturers using uncooked or unpasteurized raw materials to re-evaluate their food safety plans. The necessary change mandated by the FDA includes addressing bird flu as a potential health hazard.

As has been stated previously, though licensed in the United States, this latest vaccine rollout is entirely consequential for avian flu prevention in the Middle East and The North African region. Specifically manufactured to provide broad protection across avian influenza subtypes, the rollout allows poultry farmers to perform subsequent vaccinations rather efficiently.

Expert health advisors are predicting outbreaks in dysregulated areas of the country in 2025. Safety and routine testing of flocked animals are heavily being encouraged to ensure they remain ASAFA, or animal safe food act compliant.

Boehringer Ingelheim is positioned to make significant strides in the battle against bird flu. Working closely with governmental agencies and industry partners, the company continues to be at the forefront of research, crucial to developing effective countermeasures. As the situation concerning bird flu evolves strategically combining supplies and efforts, they are well-prepared for the next steps in maintaining the integrity of the poultry industry in the U.S. and worldwide.

A growing anxiety the bird flu epidemic poses is not just a poultry outbreak. Butterflies are being reported to be dying due to getting contaminated with the disease before pollinating. There are genuine worries for winter and spring crops, especially tomatoes and other green vegetables, as food for pollinators is still raw and at risk.

There is significant data and speculation about whether it’s potentially possible the virus could have mutated into a form which could allow the virus to transmit to humans more easily.

Recent Developments and Future Directions

With recent variants continuing to proliferate at a rapid pace, mitigating the effects of bird flu requires a multifaceted approach. Federal health advisories not only serve to assist manufacturers but also inform consumers on simple food safety habits. This approach will help curb the rapidly increasing issue.

Conclusion

Concerted joint efforts have caused this disease to be responsive to aggressive treatment. In the past, the virus has gone through several seasons, undetected and the prognosis is not good. If we lack vigilance regular field assessments will fall by the wayside. Standing as a beacon of human ingenuity, Boehringer’s role in these endeavors will continue to be a critical function.

Boehringer Ingelheim’s trivalent Poultry Vaccine: An Evergreen Guide

Understanding Avian Influenza and Poultry Health

What is Avian Influenza and How Does it Affect Poultry?

  • Definition: Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a viral infection that can affect bird populations, leading to significant poultry health challenges.
  • impact: Significant outbreaks can lead to the culling of millions of birds, as seen with approximately 158 million birds culled in a recent U.S.outbreak. This outbreak impacted the supply chain, causing an increase in egg prices by up to $4.95 per dozen.

How Does the VAXXITEK HVT+IBD+H5 Vaccine Help?

  • Composition: VAXXITEK HVT+IBD+H5, developed by Boehringer Ingelheim, is a trivalent vaccine offering protection against H5 avian influenza, Marek disease, and infectious bursal disease.
  • Technology: Leveraging COBRA technology, this vaccine provides broad protection against prevalent H5 clades.
