The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence has awarded a £879 million contract to Boeing Defence UK to provide long-term maintenance and support for the British Army’s Apache attack helicopters and the Royal Air Force’s Chinook heavy-lift helicopters.
Announced on April 15, 2026, the three-year agreement establishes the Rotary Wing Enterprise (RWE), a comprehensive support service for Joint Helicopter Command. This arrangement brings the support for both helicopter fleets together under a single contract for the first time, a move intended to reduce duplication, improve maintenance efficiency and provide better value for the taxpayer.
The announcement was made by Luke Pollard MP, the Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, during a visit to the Army Aviation Centre in Middle Wallop, Hampshire.
Employment and Industrial Impact
The contract is expected to support more than 1,000 jobs across the United Kingdom. Specifically, 700 skilled positions will be sustained at Boeing Defence UK sites located in Southern England and Scotland, including Middle Wallop, Odiham, Wattisham, Bristol, Gosport, Yeovil, and Almondbank.

An additional 500 jobs are supported within the UK supply chain. This includes 300 roles at the UK-based partner StandardAero, specifically at its facility in Gosport. As part of the agreement, We find plans to increase apprenticeships by as many as 50 over the next three years.
Minister Luke Pollard stated that the investment is part of a broader government effort to end the hollowing out and underfunding
inherited by the current administration, noting that there is an additional £5 billion in the defence budget this year being directed toward British companies.
Strategic Objectives and Capability
The Rotary Wing Enterprise contract focuses on ensuring that the AH-64E Apache and Chinook HC fleets remain mission-ready. Boeing Defence UK will deliver sustainment, maintenance, training, and integration services to enhance the availability of these assets.
This contract highlights the UK Government’s commitment to maintaining a world-class rotary wing capability and strengthening the country’s defence industrial base. It will help ensure our armed forces remain equipped to meet both current and future operational challenges with confidence and resilience.
Sir Jeremy Quin, President of Boeing UK & Ireland
Thom Breckenridge, Managing Director of Boeing Defence UK, noted that the company has a legacy of delivering these services for the UK armed forces and expressed that the company is honored to deepen its support through the RWE programme.
Broader Defence Context
The contract follows a Strategic Defence Review titled Making Britain Safer
, authored by former Labour defence secretary Lord George Robertson. In a report published on April 14, 2026, Lord Robertson suggested that the UK was under-prepared
and that national security was in peril
.
Minister Luke Pollard responded to these claims by stating that the government is addressing the state of the armed forces they inherited, describing the helicopter contract as an example of the current direction of travel for the military.
Boeing Defence UK currently employs approximately 2,100 people across 18 sites in the UK. In addition to the Apache and Chinook fleets, the organization provides support for other vital military platforms, including the C-17 Globemaster III, P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, and the future E-7 Wedgetail fleet.
