Drogheda United secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Bohemians at Dalymount park on friday night, with substitute Josh Thomas netting a late winner. The result leaves Bohemians seven points adrift of league leaders Shamrock Rovers, having played an extra game.
Reynolds Cites Lack of Clinical Edge in Home Defeat
Bohemians manager Alan Reynolds expressed his frustration following his side’s home defeat, pinpointing a deficiency in quality in the final third as the primary reason for the loss. The Dubliners dominated possession for large spells of the match but struggled to break down a resolute Drogheda defense.
“We dominated the whole 90 minutes of the game,” Reynolds stated post-match. “But I always felt although we were dominating, we needed to be more clinical up in the final third where we lacked quality. I don’t think we worked their keeper enough, that’s without a doubt.”
Drogheda, who have now recorded three consecutive 1-0 league wins against Bohemians, employed a disciplined defensive strategy, packing their penalty area to frustrate the home side.
Bohs Frustrated by Defensive Block
The Gypsies’ best opportunity of the game fell to Ross Tierney early on, after a well-placed pass from captain Dawson Devoy. However, Drogheda goalkeeper Luke Dennison produced a fine point-blank save to deny Tierney, a moment that proved pivotal.
Reynolds lamented his team’s inability to find a breakthrough after that early scare, noting how Drogheda grew in confidence as the game progressed. “We just have to look at ourselves and in the final third we didn’t do enough and we didn’t work their goalkeeper enough,” he added. The match was characterized by a stop-start rhythm, a factor Reynolds acknowledged but insisted his team should have overcome. “We needed to keep it solid, keep the door closed at the back and you’re hoping that the front players – we had a lot of attacking players on the pitch today - and we were hoping that they could create something and score.”
Doherty Praises Drogheda’s Tactical Discipline
In contrast, Drogheda boss Kevin Doherty was delighted with his team’s performance, highlighting their adherence to the game plan. “It’s a really good result,” Doherty commented. ”It’s the fourth time we’ve beaten Bohs in a row, which is massive. They are an excellent side and everybody had to be really, really good to get anything here, let alone win.”
Drogheda’s approach of disrupting play, defending deeply, and looking for opportunities on the counter-attack or from set-pieces proved effective once again. “They have their game plan and way of playing, it’s disrupt, defend well and catch you on the counterattack or score a set piece,” Reynolds conceded. ”So credit to them, they came and done a job on us tonight.”
The victory solidifies Drogheda’s position in the league, while Bohemians face a growing challenge to close the gap on the league leaders.
