The Cabin, a literary arts nonprofit located off Capitol Boulevard in downtown Boise, is nearing its reopening following a year-long renovation project dedicated to preserving the historic building.

The final phase of the preservation process is currently underway, with work on the building’s lawn marking the concluding stage of the year-long effort.

Established in 1995, The Cabin operates as a nonprofit organization that hosts camps and workshops focused on the skills of reading and writing. While the organization has a history spanning several decades, the building it occupies is significantly older, having been constructed in 1940.

The renovation process prioritized the maintenance of the structure’s original character. On the first floor, the building’s historic woodwork has been preserved. Each room within the facility features a unique wooden pattern in the ceiling.

The interior now includes several specialized areas for literary activity, including classrooms, an upstairs workspace, and a dedicated reading area.

The facility also houses various literary artifacts on display, including a row of typewriters and a bundle of pencils.

Current Status and Remaining Work

While the primary building renovations are reaching completion, some exterior developments remain. Construction is still ongoing for an amphitheater located at the site.

Executive Director Kurt Zwolfer was on-site at The Cabin on April 30, 2026, as the facility moved toward the end of its restoration process.
