On October 27, former Bolivian President Evo Morales narrowly escaped an assassination attempt while passing through the town of Shinahota, central Bolivia.

Fortunately, Mr. Morales is safe after the attack, but his personal driver suffered minor injuries.

A video taken from inside the car carrying Mr. Morales shows the former president sitting next to the driver when the attack occurred. The car’s windshield was filled with bullet holes.

In an interview with the media after the attack, Mr. Morales stated that the car was hit by at least 14 bullets, resulting in broken glass injuring his driver.

Mr. Morales described the harrowing experience, saying, “The bullets whizzed by just a few centimeters from my head.”

Initial reports indicate that at least four unknown gunmen participated in the attack when the car carrying the former Bolivian president passed through an empty road.

Mr. Morales has blamed President Luis Arce’s government for the outbreak of violence, claiming it was part of a coordinated campaign by Bolivian authorities to remove him from politics.

President Arce has condemned the attack and requested an investigation, emphasizing that any act of violence in politics must be condemned and clarified.

Notably, President Arce served as economic minister during Mr. Morales’s time in power. Currently, Mr. Arce and Mr. Morales are competing for the MAS party leadership seat in next year’s election.

Mr. Morales served as president of Bolivia from 2006 to 2019 for three consecutive terms. In 2019, he was overthrown in a coup, and Senator Jeanine Anez came to power.

However, Ms. Anez only held this position for a year and was then ousted for allegedly suppressing protests against the coup.

In November 2020, Bolivia held an early general election, and Mr. Luis Arce was elected to become the next president of Bolivia.
