Bolsonaro too Return to Prison After Supreme Court Denies House Arrest Request
Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro, 70, will be required to return to prison following a ruling by the Supreme Court on Thursday, January 25, 2024. The court rejected his petition to complete his 27-year sentence under house arrest, despite ongoing health concerns.
bolsonaro was sentenced last autumn for his role in planning a coup attempt against current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election. The attempt aimed to overturn the election results and maintain Bolsonaro’s power.
Health Complications and Previous House Arrest
Initially,Bolsonaro was permitted to serve his sentence at home due to reported health issues. However, this arrangement was revoked after authorities discovered he had attempted to tamper with his electronic ankle monitor. This act led to his re-imprisonment.
In December 2023, Bolsonaro was admitted to the hospital for a hernia operation. He also received a nerve block treatment to alleviate persistent and debilitating hiccups, further complicating his health situation.
Supreme Court Reasoning
Despite acknowledging Bolsonaro’s health condition, the supreme Court steadfast that it did not warrant continued house arrest. the court’s decision indicates that his medical needs can be adequately addressed within the prison system. Upon his discharge from the hospital, Bolsonaro will be transferred back to prison to continue serving his sentence.
The case continues to draw international attention as a significant test of democratic institutions in Brazil and the accountability of former leaders.
