Thousands of fans lined the streets of Mumbles, Wales, on August 15, to pay tribute to Grammy-nominated singer Bonnie Tyler as her coffin was brought home for her funeral, according to reports from The Guardian and the Daily Mail.

A Memorial Procession Through Mumbles

The Welsh pop star, who died at the age of 75 in a hospital in Portugal on July 8, was returned to the United Kingdom to be laid to rest, as reported by the Daily Mail. Prior to a private family service, a memorial procession traveled through Mumbles, Swansea, as the hearse made its way toward her home, Fernhill, according to the same outlet.

The Daily Mail noted that the crowds burst into applause and sang a rendition of Total Eclipse of the Heart as the coffin passed. The hearse was draped in the Welsh flag and accompanied by a framed photograph of the singer. ABC News reported that locals and fans traveled from around the United Kingdom and beyond to see the procession, with many leaving floral tributes outside her former home.

Legacy of a Welsh Music Icon

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler grew up as a coal miner’s daughter in Skewen, Wales, roughly 7 miles outside Swansea, according to ABC News. She rose to global fame with her 1983 chart-topping power ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart, which earned her three Grammy nominations and surpassed one billion streams, boosted by real solar eclipses over the years.

According to ABC News, her discography also includes major hits such as It’s a Heartache and Holding Out for a Hero from the Footloose film soundtrack. According to funeral home statements cited by the Daily Mail, a celebration of Tyler’s life is scheduled for Monday, August 17, at Swansea Minster (St. Mary’s Church), followed by a final journey through her hometown of Skewen en route to a private family service of committal.
