CANNES, France (AP) — Bono, the frontman of U2, attended the Cannes Film Festival on Friday for the premiere of his new apple TV+ documentary, “Bono: Stories of Surrender.” The screening concluded with a seven-minute standing ovation.
Visibly moved by the audience’s reaction, Bono began his remarks as the applause subsided, promising to address the festival in fluent French next year.
“I’m not a Frenchman. I’m an Irishman. I’m not even a self-made man,” Bono told the crowd. He credited his U2 bandmates, saying, “You wrote this story. The Edge wrote this story. Adam [Clayton] and Larry [Mullen Jr.] wrote this story. [Paul] McGuinness wrote this story.”
