BookTok Plagiarism⁢ Row Sparks Online Fallout

Updated June 21, 2025

BookTok, the literary corner of TikTok, is facing a ⁣series of controversies,⁣ moving away from⁢ lighthearted content to address issues such as plagiarism and online bullying. The latest scandal involves allegations ⁣of plagiarism against indie author Laura J. Robert.

Robert’s romance novel, “Beverly,” gained traction on the platform, where readers and authors‍ share recommendations. However, several⁢ BookTok creators removed their positive reviews after accusations arose that “Beverly”⁤ plagiarized R.J. Lewis’s 2016 novel, “Obsessed.” Both novels center on a female character’s romance with ⁤a childhood friend.

Some users posted excerpts from both books, highlighting similarities. Others accused Robert of using artificial intelligence to modify Lewis’s work. Some speculated that Robert and Lewis could be the same person, suggesting the⁣ controversy was a⁤ publicity stunt.

NBC News could not reach Robert for comment. Lewis declined to comment.

Lola Oluremi,⁣ a BookTok creator, expressed frustration with the shift in content. “Does anyone miss just having a silly, goofy, fun time, having a bit of a laugh?” Oluremi said in a video. “I feel ⁢like ⁢every time I log onto BookTok now, it’s something.”

earlier in June, author ⁣Ali Hazelwood, known for “The Love Hypothesis,” left Instagram after facing criticism for comments made at the Los⁤ Angeles Times Festival of ⁣Books in April.hazelwood stated that Katniss Everdeen from “The Hunger Games” should have ended up with Gale rather of Peeta.

“He’s a terrible, mean, selfish person,” ⁣Hazelwood said of Peeta. The clip circulated widely, drawing criticism.⁢ Hazelwood did⁣ not ⁣respond to requests for comment. Some BookTokers defended Hazelwood, lamenting the community’s tendency toward “meaningless discourse.”

“The way y’all have lost the plot over‍ a fictional bread boy has left me genuinely questioning the mental health‍ of‍ the book community,” said shelley Fleuridor,‍ of “book Chats ⁤with Shelley,” in a video. “We need to talk about what’s happening to this community and why some of you genuinely need to be placed in a reading ‍timeout immediately, maybe permanently.”

Victoria Aveyard, author ⁤of the ⁤”Red Queen” series, also stirred⁢ controversy by suggesting another author used generative AI⁢ in their ⁣novel. Aveyard did not name the author, citing legal concerns.

“Using GenAI to come up‍ with characters, plots ‍and story ideas isn’t writing. It’s theft,” Aveyard⁢ said. “Using GenAI doesn’t make you a writer. It⁢ makes you a thief.”

Some users accused Aveyard of being a‍ “mean ⁣girl” focused on “drama.” Some authors have posted videos showcasing their⁤ writing processes to demonstrate they do not use AI.

Robert’s social media ⁤pages and website are no longer online.”Beverly”‍ has been removed from Amazon but remains on GoodReads, where users have posted negative reviews.

Lewis ‍addressed the plagiarism⁤ allegations‍ on Instagram, calling it an indie author’s “worst nightmare.”

What’s⁢ next

The long-term consequences for Robert remain unclear, but the incident highlights the growing pains and ethical debates within the BookTok community.
