Boone County Man Faces New Charges in 2023 Dove Drive Homicide

Boone County Man Faces New Charges in 2023 Dove Drive Homicide

March 7, 2026 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor Business

A Boone County grand jury has expanded the charges against Ja’Shaun Barney, 21, in connection with the June 2023 shooting death of 33-year-old Deshon Houston on Dove Drive. The new indictment, filed Thursday, alleges a broader role for Barney in the homicide, moving beyond initial accusations to include conspiracy and actions taken before and after the shooting.

The superseding indictment now charges Barney with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, accessory to first-degree murder, accessory to first-degree assault, first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a weapon, and three counts of armed criminal action. These charges suggest prosecutors believe Barney was involved in planning the shooting, assisting those who carried it out, and taking steps to obstruct the subsequent investigation.

Barney is scheduled to be arraigned on the new charges at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Boone County Courthouse. This arraignment will be a critical juncture in the case, as Barney will formally enter a plea to the expanded list of accusations.

The case is notable for the number of individuals already implicated. According to reports, six other suspects have pleaded guilty in connection with Houston’s death. Those individuals – Alqueze Jones, Bryton Allen, Deljuan Turner, Deazes Turner, Jajuan Crockett, and Damarkus Williams – have all entered guilty pleas to murder charges. This suggests a coordinated effort, and the new charges against Barney appear to be an attempt to fully account for the involvement of all parties.

The original investigation began on June 26, 2023, when Columbia police responded to reports of shots fired on Dove Drive. Houston was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head. Evidence collected at the scene, including video footage, indicated the shooting involved multiple individuals and vehicles – a stolen white Ford Explorer and a gold Acura. Damarkus Williams has reportedly admitted to driving the Acura.

The unfolding legal proceedings highlight the complexities of prosecuting violent crime, particularly when multiple individuals are involved. The initial charges against Barney, and the subsequent superseding indictment, demonstrate a willingness by prosecutors to pursue all available avenues of investigation and to hold all responsible parties accountable. The guilty pleas from the six other suspects likely informed the decision to broaden the charges against Barney, providing additional evidence of a coordinated criminal enterprise.

The case also underscores the challenges of securing convictions in homicide cases. The prosecution’s strategy of securing guilty pleas from multiple co-defendants can be a powerful tool, as it can provide valuable testimony and evidence against remaining suspects. However, it also carries the risk of reduced sentences for those who cooperate, potentially leading to criticism from victims’ families and the public.

The arraignment next Monday will be closely watched by legal observers and the Columbia community. The outcome of the proceedings, and any subsequent trial, will likely have significant implications for the families of those involved and for the broader effort to address violent crime in the region. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence and the importance of thorough investigation and prosecution.

The legal process continues, with Barney now facing a significantly expanded set of charges. The prosecution will need to present compelling evidence to convince a jury of his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The defense will undoubtedly challenge the evidence and argue for Barney’s innocence. The coming months will be crucial in determining the ultimate outcome of this case.
