The Mechanics of Brain Ripples
The researchers identified significantly more high-frequency ripples in the hippocampus following the exercise sessions. These ripples occur when large groups of neurons send electrical impulses together in a brief, strong burst.
These neural bursts are described as being similar to high-speed data transfers. They assist the brain in strengthening, organizing, and retrieving memories through a process known as memory consolidation, where newly formed memories are strengthened into long-term memories.
In animals, ripples are known to play a key role in stabilising memories after an experience. You can think of them as moments when the brain rapidly “reviews” information, helping convert recent experiences into lasting memories.

While neuroscientists had previously documented these ripples in rats and mice, this study used a rare technique called intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) to confirm the link in humans, providing a clearer and more detailed picture of brain activity than indirect imaging methods.
Study Parameters and Intensity
The study tracked 14 participants between the ages of 17 and 50 who were suffering from medically intractable epilepsy. Researchers recorded brain activity before and after the participants completed 20 minutes of cycling on a stationary bike.
The cycling was performed at a comfortable pace, defined as 50% to 60% of the participants’ maximum predicted heart rate for their age. The data revealed a correlation between the intensity of the workout and the neural response.
Higher heart rates during the cycling sessions were associated with stronger ripples both during and after the exercise. According to study author Dr. Juan Ramirez-Villegas, This suggests that the intensity of physical activity may influence how strongly the brain’s memory circuits respond.
Broader Cognitive Benefits of Exercise
Beyond brief bouts of activity, regular moderate-intensity exercise over a period of six months to a year has been associated with an increase in the volume of selected brain regions that control thinking and memory.
