Stanley Borden, a 7-foot player who holds the distinction of being the last college basketball player to have played for the legendary Mike Krzyzewski, is transferring to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Borden announced the move to UTSA from Duke University on Thursday.
Borden, who joined Duke as a walk-on in 2021, remained with the Blue Devils for four years after Coach KS retirement. Despite limited playing time, Borden cherishes his experiance under Krzyzewski.
“Everything you’ve heard about Coach K’s aura and energy is true,” Borden saeid from Istanbul, where his family resides. “He joked and,well,used colorful language frequently enough,leaving you guessing about his seriousness. Learning from him at that stage of my life is unforgettable.”
After injuries sidelined him during his junior year, borden entered the transfer portal with one year of eligibility remaining, seeking a program where he could compete for playing time. several schools expressed interest.
“Many schools were starting summer workouts,” Borden said. “UTSA offers an possibility to compete and develop, with coaches focused on player improvement.”
last season, Borden appeared in three games for Duke, recording one rebound and one blocked shot. He is still looking for his first college points.He values the experience of practicing against top players while earning a computer science degree.
“Being around Dereck Lively II, Paolo banchero, Cooper Flagg, and other great college players significantly improved my game,” Borden said.
Despite limited minutes, Borden became a fan favorite at Duke. As a sophomore, he famously entertained the Cameron Crazies with a surprise saxophone performance during a preseason event that went viral.
Borden said he would gladly create another musical performance if UTSA has a similar event to kick off the basketball season.
