Border Protectors in Training: The Unseen Heroes of National Defense
Germany’s Federal Police to Enhance Border Controls with Trainee Support
Germany’s federal police are set to increase border controls, leading to higher staffing requirements. To address the shortage, trainees from the Federal Police Academy of Lübeck will be assigned to support border security operations.
Staff Shortages Prompt Action
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has ordered the federal police to strengthen border controls. However, this move has resulted in staff shortages, prompting the need for additional support. According to a report by the news magazine “Der Spiegel,” trainees will be deployed to fill the gaps.
Trainees to Support Priority Operations
A letter from the Federal Police Academy of Lübeck, quoted by “Der Spiegel,” states that the intention is not to maintain the same level of control intensity as during UEFA EURO 2024. Instead, a learning group and three managers will be assigned to support the border guard. This will enable the federal police to carry out priority operations and internal border controls based on situational forecasts.
Coordination and Support from Other Units
The extent to which this will allow for more refusals to be implemented directly at the border is still being coordinated. Additionally, officers will be redeployed from airports and train stations to support border security, according to federal police sources cited by “Der Spiegel.”
