Borealis, a⁢ leading ‌polyolefin producer headquartered in Vienna, is considerably expanding its ⁣production⁢ capabilities at its Schwechat, Austria⁢ facility. This investment aims to solidify Schwechat’s position as a key⁣ European hub for the company, particularly in polypropylene (PP) compounding – a process ⁢that blends base materials ⁣with additives like glass fibers and recyclates to enhance⁢ properties such as durability and heat resistance.

Strategic Expansion targets Key Growth Sectors

The increased⁣ capacity will⁢ primarily serve growing ⁤demand in three core submission areas: consumer products (including household appliances), the mobility sector (specifically lightweight components for electric vehicles), and infrastructure projects (such ⁤as protective coatings for steel pipes). Borealis CEO Stefan Doboczky described the expansion as the company’s third ⁤major investment this year, signaling a period of considerable growth.

This expansion ‍occurs alongside⁣ a larger strategic restructuring. OMV,which holds a 75% stake in Borealis, and ADNOC,with a 25% ⁤share, are planning to merge Borealis and their joint venture,Borouge, into a new entity‌ called Borouge Group International. The deal, also encompassing the acquisition of Nova Chemicals, is projected to create ‌a company valued at ⁣approximately⁤ $60 billion‍ (51.5 billion euros) as of September 4, 2024.

Listing and Leadership‍ in Transition

Borouge ⁣Group ⁤International⁣ is expected to be based in Austria and initially listed on the‍ Abu Dhabi stock exchange, with a secondary listing planned ⁣for Vienna. The future role of Borealis CEO stefan Doboczky within the newly formed group‌ remains undefined. The completion ⁤of this complex transaction is currently⁣ slated ⁢for the first ⁣quarter of 2026.

Global Footprint and Supply Chain Security

Beyond schwechat and its ⁢Abu Dhabi joint venture, Borealis maintains a significant global presence with operations in‍ Germany, ⁤Belgium, Finland, Sweden, and the ‍United‌ States (Texas). The Schwechat‍ expansion is intended to ‌ensure a reliable supply ‍of materials for both Austrian ‍customers and key‌ export markets,‌ strengthening Borealis’s ‍position ‍in the⁣ competitive polyolefin landscape.
