Borealis Invests in Schwechat Plant, Eyes New Borouge Group Formation

Borealis, a leading polyolefin producer headquartered in Vienna, is considerably expanding its production capabilities at its Schwechat, Austria facility. This investment aims to solidify Schwechat’s position as a key European hub for the company, particularly in polypropylene (PP) compounding – a process that blends base materials with additives like glass fibers and recyclates to enhance properties such as durability and heat resistance.
Strategic Expansion targets Key Growth Sectors
The increased capacity will primarily serve growing demand in three core submission areas: consumer products (including household appliances), the mobility sector (specifically lightweight components for electric vehicles), and infrastructure projects (such as protective coatings for steel pipes). Borealis CEO Stefan Doboczky described the expansion as the company’s third major investment this year, signaling a period of considerable growth.
Borouge Group International: A New Polyolefin Powerhouse
This expansion occurs alongside a larger strategic restructuring. OMV,which holds a 75% stake in Borealis,and ADNOC,with a 25% share,are planning to merge Borealis and their joint venture,Borouge,into a new entity called Borouge Group International. The deal, also encompassing the acquisition of Nova Chemicals, is projected to create a company valued at approximately $60 billion (51.5 billion euros) as of September 4, 2024.
Listing and Leadership in Transition
Borouge Group International is expected to be based in Austria and initially listed on the Abu Dhabi stock exchange, with a secondary listing planned for Vienna. The future role of Borealis CEO stefan Doboczky within the newly formed group remains undefined.The completion of this complex transaction is currently slated for the first quarter of 2026.
Global Footprint and Supply Chain Security
Beyond schwechat and its Abu Dhabi joint venture, Borealis maintains a significant global presence with operations in Germany, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, and the United States (Texas). The Schwechat expansion is intended to ensure a reliable supply of materials for both Austrian customers and key export markets, strengthening Borealis’s position in the competitive polyolefin landscape.
