Bose has expanded its open-ear wearable lineup by introducing the Sport Open Earbuds, priced at $199 / £179.95, designed specifically for running, workouts, and outdoor activities. The new clip-on headphones launch globally on October 15, offering an alternative to traditional in-ear models by utilizing a C-arm cuff that rests outside the ear canal to keep users aware of their surrounding environment.

Design and Durability Upgrades

Unlike the older Bose Sport Earbuds released in 2020, which relied on silicone tips plugging directly into the ear canal, the new Sport Open model features a bone-conducting design with a thin C-arm cuff wrapped in soft silicone. This workout-focused design is built to maintain stability during running and high-motion exercises. Additionally, the earbuds include textured physical buttons intended to make audio control easier when fingers are sweaty. Durability has also been upgraded from the previous generation’s IPX4 water splash protection to an IP54 rating, providing both water splash resistance and tested dust protection, according to product specifications.

Sound Quality and Open-Ear Audio Tech

Because open-ear designs do not seal the ear canal, they inherently lack active noise cancellation. Instead, Bose has integrated its OpenAudio technology, which directs sound toward the ear while allowing ambient noise such as traffic and public announcements to remain clearly audible. According to Bose, the system uses SoundDesign digital sound processing to deliver balanced clarity and deep bass levels despite the open configuration. Furthermore, the device features an Auto Volume function that automatically adjusts loudness as background noise levels shift.

Battery Life and Charging Case Comparison

The Bose Sport Open Earbuds provide up to seven hours of continuous playback on a single charge, supported by a wireless charging case that holds an additional 22 hours of power, according to official specifications. This represents an improvement over the older Sport Earbuds, which were rated for five hours per charge—though independent testing frequently saw actual usage land closer to three or four hours—and lacked a wireless charging case entirely. Connectivity is powered by Bluetooth 5.4 with support for Bluetooth multipoint and Google Fast Pair on Android devices, alongside a SpeechClarity system that uses dedicated microphones to separate the wearer’s voice from background noise during calls.
