Braves Split Opening Week, Gear Up for WDA Action

Rugby, ND – The Bottineau-Rugby Braves hockey team kicked off their 2024-2025 Western Dakota Association (WDA) season with a split, securing a home win against Devils Lake while falling to May-Port Area in non-conference play.
The Braves will look to build momentum this week as thay host Jamestown on Friday, december 6, followed by a matchup against Dickinson on Saturday, December 7, at the Bottineau Community Arena.Braves Fall to May-Port in High-Scoring Affair
On Saturday, November 30, the Braves welcomed the May-Port Area Patriots from the Eastern Dakota Conference (EDC) to Rugby. The Patriots emerged victorious in a back-and-forth battle, defeating the Braves 5-3.
May-Port struck first in the opening period with a goal from Alex Aarsvold, assisted by Caron Brayden. They extended their lead in the second period with an unassisted goal by Wyatt Heskin.
The Braves answered back with a goal from Cooper Beckman, assisted by Brody Nordmark, followed by a power-play goal from Grady Glasner, assisted by Tukker Fedje and Khaliel Abdurrahman, tying the game at 2-2.
May-Port regained control with two more goals in the second period, one from Heskin (assisted by Brayden) and another from Cale Gensrich (assisted by Jonathan Muhs and Liam Marquardt).
Payton Getzlaff brought the Braves within one goal early in the third period, assisted by Glasner and Fedje. However, Sawyer McGillis sealed the win for May-Port with an unassisted goal late in the game.
Despite the loss, Braves goalie Noah Bedlion faced a barrage of shots, saving 29 out of 34. May-Port goalie Kaden hogloss also put on a strong performance, stopping 50 of 53 shots.
Braves Open Season with Win Over Devils Lake
The Braves started their season strong on wednesday, November 26, defeating the Devils Lake Firebirds 3-2 in a hard-fought home opener.
Casey Freeman opened the scoring for the Braves in the first period, assisted by Gavin Bartsch and Khaliel Abdurrahman.
Tukker Fedje and Payton Getzlaff connected for a goal in the second period, extending the Braves’ lead to 2-0.Devils Lake fought back in the third period with a goal from Thomas Conner, but Getzlaff responded quickly, scoring his second goal of the game, assisted by Fedje and Grady Glasner.
Brody Parker sealed the victory for the Braves with a late goal, securing the 3-2 win.

Grand Forks, ND – The University of North Dakota has announced contract extensions for both Director of Athletics Bill Chaves and Head Football Coach bubba Schweigert, solidifying leadership for the Fighting Hawks athletic program.
Chaves,who has served as Director of Athletics since 2018,will remain at the helm through June 30,2028. Under his leadership, UND Athletics has seen notable achievements, including conference championships, NCAA tournament appearances, and academic success for student-athletes.
“Bill Chaves has been instrumental in elevating UND Athletics to new heights,” said UND President Andrew Armacost. “His commitment to academic excellence, competitive success, and the overall well-being of our student-athletes is unwavering. Schweigert, who has been the head coach of the Fighting Hawks football team since 2014, will remain at the helm through the 2027 season. During his tenure, Schweigert has guided the program through a prosperous transition to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and has consistently fielded competitive teams.
